BRAVE

The UK’s first magazine-style visual decision aid for mastectomy

BRAVE  was created to address a recognised gap in visual decision support for women undergoing mastectomy, with or without breast reconstruction (including gene mutations such as BRCA1 & BRCA2) and is inclusive of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.

It responds directly to calls from Breast Cancer Now, Project BeliEVE, and other research highlighting the urgent need to integrate visual decision aids into clinical pathways to support shared decision‑making and improve patient confidence.

BRAVE  is the first visual decision aid of its kind, grounded in lived experience and developed in partnership with patients and clinicians. It combines fine‑art, real‑life imagery with personal narratives and medical information to present mastectomy outcomes in a clear, diverse and sensitive way.

"BRAVE is a truly innovative, patient-centered resource, with diversity and inclusion at it's core. Patient support charities have been calling for diverse breast imagery support for women. This is it!"

—Dr. Gemma McKenna, Assistant Professor, HSMC University of Birmingham

WE... EMPOWER PATIENTS

Our vision is simple: every woman in the UK facing a mastectomy deserves to take BRAVE  home. Introduced by clinicians during consultation, BRAVE  supports ongoing reflection and shared decision-making beyond the clinic. It bridges the gap between clinical conversation and the deeply personal process of decision-making that continues long after the appointment. The images help guide discussions, deepen understanding, and provide continuous support as women explore their surgery options with their clinical team, loved ones, and in their own time. BRAVE enhances shared decision-making; it does not replace clinical expertise.

WE... SUPPORT CLINICIANS

BRAVE is designed to be used by clinicians as a supportive visual decision‑making aid that can be introduced into the patient pathway where it enhances conversations and understanding.

Offering clinicians a resource that supports clear, compassionate discussions with patients, BRAVE  contributes to a more confident and collaborative decision‑making experience.  It also ensures inclusive representation, reflecting diverse body types, ethnicities, surgical outcomes and recovery stages.
